BENEFITS OF WINTER TIRES

Winter Tires were made for the colder weather. They’re manufactured with a special rubber compound specifically designed for snow and ice. That’s why they stay flexible in freezing temperatures and give better traction on the roads. Winter tire treads also have sipes and thin slits cut across the tire’s surface to improve control driving in snowy, wet or icy conditions, provide better acceleration, and reduce braking distance.

In Ontario, it’s useful to keep in mind the 7-for-7 Rule. When the weather stays below 7 degrees Celsius for 7 consecutive days, it’s a good time to change to winter tires.

Only you can decide what works best for your lifestyle and budget. One set of rims will be more cost-effective in the beginning. However, if you purchase a second set of rims, you will avoid the extra charge of removing the rims and swapping them every time you change your tires for the season. When your winter tires and all-season tires have separate rims, they will last longer because they avoid doing double-duty all year long (only one set will be used through the snow, ice and salt in the winter).

Each type of vehicle, depending on the year, make, and model will require different dimensions for tires and rims. By entering that information into our Tire Finder Tool, you can get recommendations in a few easy steps.

You can also look up the tire size code for your vehicle in these places:

• The inside of the driver’s door — look for a sticker that lists the tire size

• Your owner’s manual — check the index or appropriate chapter

• The sidewall of your current tires — this may be difficult if your tires are old and worn

Here is an example of what you might find: 195/65R/15. This code is a standard size for a sedan.

• 195 = the width of the tires you need, measured in millimetres from the inner sidewall to the outer sidewall

• 65 = the number indicates the aspect ratio, or profile height, of the tire, which is determined by dividing the height of the tire from the rim by the width. In this case, 65R means that the tire’s height is 65% of the width

• 15 = the last number represents the diameter measured in inches for the rim that the tire can be mounted on
